Start, Stop, Continue

Yesterday I spoke to 150 plus people in one of the larger school districts in North Carolina about building better schools by engaging support staff. This particular group included an administrator and a secretary/front office receptionist from each school. One of the high impact exercises I asked them to participate in is called Stop, Start, and Continue. The secretaries looked their leaders in the eyes and said these words:

Please offer feedback. What would you like for me to start doing, stop doing and continue to do?

The conversations were reflective, open, and constructive, resulting in a renewed commitment to provide excellent service to an important internal customer. Feedback is truly the breakfast of champions and people will be more honest with you if you ask for it. Try this exercise with your boss. If she is an effective leader, she will not only share insights on how to improve performance, she will invite you to give her feedback. She knows the best leaders never stop learning.
